Wine n’ Vibe is an event in partnership with one of my favorite restaurants on the island, Green Gamut. Tasty with Kc is more than just food reviews. My goal is to host exciting food and beverage events throughout The Bahamas. I started with a wine tasting because I wanted to give an event some millennials probably hadn’t experienced yet. After days of research, I decided to make it a food pairing as well. My research then took days to find which food paired best with which wines.
After multiple visits to the wine store, I settled on Merlot, Shiraz/ Syrah, Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Moscato.
Pro tip 1: You want to serve white wines before red wine, light wines before heavy wine, and dry wines before sweet wine.
The next research I did was to find the perfect food pairings for the wines I selected. I sent Green Gamut the following list that was more like a guide to creating the menu. The Green Gamut Bistro serves healthy food options so the list you see fell in line with their brand.
1) Moscato- seasonings like cinnamon, ginger, basil, cardamom, lime, cloves, chili peppers, cayenne pepper, fennel, cilantro, orange, and mint
2) Rosé- Hummus, Flatbread, or Pesto
3) Merlot- cranberries, grilled mushrooms, tomato sauce pasta, and vegetable stew
4) Shiraz- beans and lentils, Mushrooms, and grilled vegetables
5) Cabernet Sauvignon- dark chocolate, mint, and walnuts
I was so happy when they sent the menu back! The food pairings were perfect for the wines. I was sure it was going to be a hit with the guests as well. To elevate the experience, I ordered a charcuterie board because what’s a wine tasting without one?
I put some information together for the attendees on the proper wine etiquette. I wanted the guests to learn about wines and experience them in a new way from what we are used to.
It’s Wine Time!
Wine n’ Vibe finally arrived and I was a bit nervous at first. Was everything going to be okay? Were the pairings going to make sense to the guests? I printed out wine scorecards for each person to fill out throughout the night. This was to rate their experience but also to see their favorites of the night. This would also better prepare me for my next wine tasting.
The guests started arriving at 7 pm sharp. I am thankful to the staff at The Green Gamut for their patience and great customer service. With each glass of wine poured, the guest got their food pairings, sat down, and enjoyed. Once they went through the five-course wine tasting and food pairing, they were given the option to drink a full glass of their favorite and get another plate of their favorite food. If they liked any of the wines in particular they would be able to purchase them on the spot.
At the end of the night, wine cards were turned in, and the guests left pleased with the event. It was a success! After the scorecards were tallied the winner of the night was the Wente Merlot. This wine can be purchased locally from any Phluid Phactory location. The favorite food of the night was the Caramel Apple Cheesecake.
Let’s Wine About it
From this event, I learned that maybe 5 wines were a bit too much. I went through the experience myself and after the 3rd pairing, I was a bit full. Also, next time I will try to include fun games and add some live entertainment. I’m thinking along the lines of a jazz band to give the event more volume. But overall it was a wonderful experience and something I am definitely doing again in the near future. (Hint Hint: in the Summer)
Wine, Thank you
